Church History Project

At least once a month on Thursday evenings our History work group meets to study original sources shedding light on the history of Central Presbyterian Church.

Tarentum Genealogical Society

The Tarentum Genealogical Society has a new home at Central Presbyterian Church.  After a number of factors forced the Society to leave the Tarentum Community Library, the new location at Central has given them an opportunity to develop a valuable library of resources and tools for genealogical and historical research.

The TGS library is open and staffed on Thursdays.  The library is also open some Saturday mornings. The Society holds its meetings on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Social Hall at the Central Presbyterian Church. Many of the meetings have interesting and informative programs.

Anniversaries of Women's Ordination

In 2005 and 2006 the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is celebrating the 100th, 75th, and 50th anniversaries of women's ordination. Our denomination first ordained women as deacons in 1906, as elders in 1930, and as ministers of Word and Sacrament in 1956.

In 1956, the year the Presbyterian Church USA started ordaining women as ministers of Word and Sacrament, Central Presbyterian Church had a congregational conversation about whether it should elect and ordain women as deacons or elders.

In 1957 Central Presbyterian Church elected two women as deacons: A. Jeannette Broadfoot and Frances Elliott. Miss Broadfoot was born July 17, 1908 and died November 2, 2000. Mrs. Elliott was later ordained as an elder and is still actively serving Central Presbyterian Church in many capacities.
